"What makes me smile is the hope of having a new day and using it to help others,” says Gale Kupec, of Kingsport, Tenn., winner of our What Makes Me Smile contest.

Three years ago, the certified occupational therapist assistant was diagnosed with a form of rheumatoid arthritis. “Just getting out of bed each day was a struggle,” recalls Gale. Despite constant pain, she kept working for the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation at Hillside nursing home. “I knew that my patients felt as bad as I did and needed my help to return to a productive life,” says Gale. And she found that being there for her patients helped her keep a sunny outlook despite her illness. Fortunately, her doctor eventually found a treatment that improved her condition. “Later, I found out that he had initially expected me to become disabled,” says Gale. “Had I not stayed active by continuing to work, my health probably would have deteriorated. I know that if it weren’t for the inspiration from my patients, I would not be here today.” For Gale’s good cheer, Lumineers will provide a complete set of teeth veneers to give her a smile that’s every bit as bright as her spirit!
