Update Your Hair & Drop a Decade
Give your locks (and face) a lift with these simple tricks
Camouflage Crows-Feet
Try: Fringe
When it comes to fine lines around your eyes, its not a matter of hiding them, but rather de-emphasizing them, says senior stylist Mark Katz of Siren Salon in Chicago. Light, long fringe cut to hang over your temples will soften tiny crows-feet around your eyes. To play up those pieces, apply a tiny bit of pomade to the ends (this move will also keep the fringe from turning into frizz).
Avoid: Tight, slick ponytails or buns that leave all your lines and imperfections in full view.
Firm Your Jawline
Try: A smart updo
For an age-defying updo, twist or braid the back of your hair into a loose chignon or bun, allowing your layers to fall. If a few front pieces dont come free on their own, pull them out theyll play up your firm cheekbones and give you a classy do.
Avoid: Curled-under ends they can make your face look round. When you style, make sure to drag the curling iron or round brush from root to end for allover body and movement.
Get a Brow Lift
Try: Going shorter
Our hair tends to get drier and thinner over time. Layers cut above the shoulders can provide volume in all the right places, and they lift and open the face dramatically, says stylist Elaine Brown of Trillium Salon in New York City.
Avoid: Too-long, all-one-length hair tends to look lifeless and it can visually pull the corners of the eyes and mouth down, packing on unwanted years. Bottom line: Unless your hair is in great condition shiny and sleek keep it above the shoulder.
Hide Forehead Lines
Try: Long bangs
Are bangs better than Botox? Maybe. To hide forehead lines (at least temporarily), stylist Ashley Javier, a spokesperson for Herbal Essences, suggests getting wispy, just-below-the-brow bangs. Surprisingly, this is also a fast fix for droopy eyelids, says Javier. Since the longer wisps cover a bit of the lid, it makes sagging less obvious, he says.
Avoid: Forehead-revealing, pixie-style bangs. They are even tough for twentysomethings to pull off!
Brighten Your Complexion
Try: Healthy hair color
If you have only a few grays (i.e., salt-and-pepper hair), use a semi-permanent dye, which doesnt require much upkeep. Or give highlighting a try to disguise the silver. Almost all gray? Why not embrace it, says Katz. The secret to looking fabulous (like Helen Mirren, below) with an all-silver mane is having split-free, shiny ends, which you can get by regularly applying a sheer color glaze to your strands.
Avoid: Dyeing hair a shade that is too dark or too light for your skin tone it can make you look washed out. Also, leave the one-tone jet blacks and platinum blondes on the shelf. Instead, opt for a hue that is in the middle of your color range, which will typically be right around the hair color you had in preschool!
