Stay Healthy This Holiday Season - Page 3

Surprising energy sapper #3: Your Fondness for Eggnog
The holidays can wreak havoc on your stomach, especially if you have an unsuspected food sensitivity, says gastroenterologist Patricia Raymond, M.D., assistant professor of clinical internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. "Many women are unaware that they're lactose-intolerant; and even the ones who know may not realize that a lot of holiday fare, like hot chocolate, eggnog and vegetable dips, also contain problem-causing ingredients," she explains. The result: cramping, gas and fatigue.

Feel-better Rx: After you indulge, munch on a candy cane! German studies have shown that menthol, a soothing extract in peppermint, can alleviate GI woes. But the single best way to avoid stomach problems, says Dr. Raymond, is to be cautious before you load your plate or glass. "If you don't know what's in it, don't put it in your mouth!" she advises. "And don't eat too much at once -- large meals can exacerbate stomach woes."
