Stomach Problems Tamed, Naturally

Tame your tummy troubles the natural way

Unknown Unknown

The next time you have a stomachache, don't automatically reach for over-the-counter aids. "Once a chat with your doctor confirms that the pain isn't caused by something serious, there are things you can do other than taking medication," says William Boggs, M.D., medical director of the University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Integrative Medicine.

His alternative suggestions, for different troubles:

Gas Pain and Cramps
Try meditation or relaxing breathing exercises. "These help relieve both gas pains and cramps from gastrointestinal or menstrual conditions," explains Dr. Boggs. "They can also be helpful in managing the pain associated with cancer." (But if your pain persists, see a doc — you could have a more serious problem that requires specific treatment.)

Also, place a hot water bottle on your belly and rest quietly on your back. This is especially helpful for period cramps, sore abs and intestinal illnesses.

Nausea
Peppermint oil capsules

Ginger in any form (pickled from a sushi place, a piece of peeled ginger root, 1/8 teaspoon of powdered ginger mixed with a teaspoon of honey).

Echinacea — especially for pain and inflammation. "People think of it as only for colds but it can reduce inflammation and stimulate the immune system," says Dr. Boggs. The same goes for goldenseal.

Turmeric and neem are often used in Ayurvedic medicine (a form of alternative medicine primarily practiced in India) to calm bellyaches.

Heartburn
If acid reflux ails you, remember that the active ingredients in most antacids are calcium and some combination of magnesium and aluminum oxides. Before resorting to one of those, try the natural, whole food approach — such as a glass of milk! — first.

Also, herbs like meadowsweet, marshmallow root, comfrey root and goldenseal may relieve your symptoms, says Dr. Boggs. Aloe vera juice also can be effective in soothing heartburn.
