How Tired is Too Tired? - Page 2

Sick and Tired
If your fatigue is accompanied by symptoms like those below, an illness could be your problem — not sleep deprivation. Check with your doctor.

You are tired and…
  • You have a fever. You may have an infection; consult your doctor.
  • You are constantly thirsty and urinate a great deal. This could be a sign of diabetes.
  • You take diuretics or beta blockers. These drugs, used to treat high blood pressure and heart disease, are notorious energy sappers.
  • Your muscles ache, especially in your neck, shoulders, knees and hips, and you have trouble sleeping. Your doctor may check for fibromyalgia, a difficult-to-treat condition that involves widespread pain.
  • You feel much worse for 24 hours after you exercise, and you’ve felt this way for six months or more. You may have chronic fatigue syndrome, a debilitating ailment of overpowering exhaustion.
  • You feel sad or have lost interest in life. You may be depressed; consult a psychologist or psychiatrist.
  • You have a small, circular rash or you have been in the woods lately. Lyme disease, an infection trans-mitted by ticks, is possible; your doctor can test for it.
