q&s tip

Reward Yourself!
"I grew up rewarding myself with food," says Jeanne Onken, who as an adult ditched 90 lbs., "so I've decided not to fight that but to incorporate it into my new healthy way of eating. At work, I bring in mini meals that I can enjoy every two hours or so, whenever I finish a project. I’ll cut up an apple and dip it in peanut butter or make a trail mix of raisins and sunflower seeds."

“What I Know Now”
Jeanne shares her weight-loss tips

1. Mealtime isn’t just about eating. It’s also family time. Savoring a home-cooked dinner while you’re enjoying family conversation is a lot more satisfying than wolfing down fast food in front of the TV.

2. Healthy food can be fast food. “I’ll make a few chicken breasts on Sunday and then use them throughout the week in chicken chili and chicken noodle soup.”

3. Small changes add up. “I cook with spray butter rather than regular butter, use light mayo in place of full-fat and make my own pita chips instead of devouring greasy potato chips.” Just cut pita bread into quarters, spray with Pam, sprinkle a little garlic powder or Mrs. Dash on top and bake in a 350ºF oven until crisp (about 10 minutes).
