The Walk, Stop and Shop
If youre shopping for holiday gifts, this is an easy way to sneak in a workout, says fitness expert Tamilee Webb.
- When you get to the mall or shopping center, park as far away from the door as you possibly can.
Make a loop around the walkway of the mall or shopping center before you go into any stores.
- Once you make a purchase, walk all the way back to the car to put the bag away.
If youre carrying something thats slightly heavy, slowly lift it up and down as you walk along to give your arms a toning workout. Make sure to walk (not ride) up any escalators you encounter.
- Make another loop around the mall each time you come back inside, before you enter a new store.
Each time you make a purchase, walk back to your car. Repeat until your shopping is done!
Youll burn: About 300 calories per hourThe Stand-in-Line Stabilizer
When youre waiting in long holiday lines or sitting in traffic, make good use of your time by trying this move, says Webb. It will help strengthen your core, which improves posture, making your body instantly appear longer and leaner.
- Whether you are in a standing or seated position, squeeze your glutes (rear end) and abdominal muscles as hard as you can.
Hold for four counts, then release. Repeat until you get to the front of the line.
- If you are standing, make this move more challenging by slightly lifting up one leg and trying to balance on one foot for four counts as you squeeze.
Then repeat with the other leg. Not only will this help tone your core, but it will also work your inner and outer thigh muscles.
Youll burn: About 20 calories every five minutes. (Wait in five lines, and youll have burned 100!)
