What's it Worth?

— P. R. , Nazareth, Penn.

Your sign was made in the early to mid-1930s by the American Sign Company; “A-M2-60” is a stock number. Whether your sign is one- or two-sided makes little difference because most collectors display only one side — the surface in the best condition. There were many versions of this sign, some more than six feet in length. In this case, bigger is not better in terms of value; most collectors do not have space to show large signs. Your sign is a “comfortable size,” thus broadening its appeal. Although this item hung on brackets outside a building, it seems not to have suffered color fading and rusting caused by weather. It’s in fine to very fine condition, with minor imperfections. Estimated value: Between $600 and $700 (if it had been in mint condition, the price jumps to between $1,000 to $1,500)
