Has the value of my Lindbergh medal, which belonged to my grandfather, taken flight?
Charles A. Lindbergh (1902 1974) took off from Roosevelt Field, near New York City, on May 20, 1927. Slightly less than 34 hours later, he landed at Le Bourget Field outside of Paris, becoming the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Upon his return via ship to New York, four million people lined the streets to honor Lindbergh with a ticker-tape parade. Then he embarked on a three-month tour, visiting 92 cities in 49 states.
Hundreds of commemorative items were issued to honor Lindbergh. France issued the medal that you own, but it is among the most common of the Lindbergh medals. Estimated value: At an antiques mall or show, it would sell for $100 to $125. On eBay, youd get $65 to $80.
