This adorable 8½-inch wooden Mr. Peanut figure is one of my most treasured possessions. I would love to know more about it.
Amedeo Obici and Mario Peruzzi of Scranton, Penn., established the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company in 1906. In 1916, the company held a contest for the best drawing of a little peanut person. Antonio Gentile, a schoolboy from Virginia, won the $5 prize, and Mr. Peanut, based on Gentiles drawing, made his debut in a 1918 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Over the years, Planters updated Mr. Peanuts appearance, with major changes occurring in 1927 and 1962. Your painted wooden figure dates from the 1930s. Completeness and the condition of its paint are the keys to its value, which is between $75 and $100.
