My wifes grandmother gave us this hand-painted bowl. We believe its Russian. What can you tell us about it?
— T.M., Belleville, Ill.
The trademark on the bottom of the bowl features a royal insignia of a crown and the double-headed eagle, symbol of the Russian imperial throne. Below that is Russian text encircling a horse and rider. The mark, identified in Ludwig Danckerts Directory of European Porcelain, indicates that your bowl was made by Kusnetzoff, a major Russian ceramics manufacturer founded in the 1800s. Other Kusnetzoff ceramics can be found on eBay or listed on artfact.com, which tracks pieces sold at auction; based on asking prices and presale estimates, those who own these ceramics place a high value on them. Book value for your bowl, which has some paint loss, is about $350. Still, few pieces Ive seen offered online actually sell. Think conservatively: Value your bowl at about $225.
