I acquired these Will Rogers figures at a yard sale. They stand 6 ¼” inches tall and are marked “495”. Can you tell me what they are and what they’re made of?

You are in possession of a set of 1930s cast-iron bookends made by Hubley Manufacturing of Lancaster, Penn., according to Gerald McBride’s A Collectors’ Guide to Cast Metal Bookends. Hubley, founded in 1894, is best known for its cast-iron toys, but the company created novelties, clocks and more. Their bookends came in several painted finishes; bronze was very popular. While yours bear some resemblance to the 1930s entertainer and social commentator Will Rogers, they are a general representation and weren’t licensed by him. The photo indicates that there is some rust and paint loss to the bookends; Their value is approximately $70.
