My dad carried this Royal Typewriter with him in the U.S. Army Air Corps, which later became the U.S. Air Force, during World War II and the Korean War. Afterward, he used it for jobs with the military reserves, Civil Air Patrol and Yonkers (New York) Fire Department. Its sentimental value is important to me. What is its monetary worth?

— N.R., Redding, Conn.

The Royal Typewriter, introduced in 1906, was so well built that its models flooded the typewriter market by mid-century. The hardy construction has assured a high survival rate; thus, the value for these machines is low. In an antiques mall, your Royal portable would be priced between $25 and $35. At a garage sale, any amount over $5 would be considered a success.
