Feng Shui Your Home for Spring

Bring good luck to your home with Chinese decorating traditions

Feng shui -- the art of increasing energy in the space you live in -- is all about clearing out the dust, freshening things up and being open to new possibilities. And while it may sound fancy, it doesn't have to cost a dime! Give your own nest a boost with these easy tips from Stephanie McWilliams, host of HGTV’s Fun Shui and founder of Evolving Arts:

1. Clear out the past. Holding on to old things holds you back from trying something novel — whether it’s a new purchase or an idea.

2. Clean, thoroughly. Wash places you wouldn’t normally think of, like under the microwave. Your spot will feel fresher, not just to you but to other people, says McWilliams.

3. Give everything a home. Putting everything to bed, right down to your car keys, quiets your mind and keeps you organized — no more last-minute searching!

4. Arrange furniture in welcoming positions. No one likes walking into a party where everyone's back is toward you. "Pretend your furniture has faces," McWilliams says.

5. Be safe and comfortable. Always bumping into the coffee table? Before rushing out to buy a new one, angle it another way. You'll instantly feel more at ease.

6. Create power spots. Wherever you're sitting, face the room's entrance. Knowing nobody can sneak up on you helps you feel stronger. If it's impossible — you can't move the sofa, say — hang a mirror so you can see behind you.

7. Step outside your comfort zone. Painting a wall? Avoid white, beige and cream, McWilliams advises. Go for a hue you wouldn't usually try -- a warm color like red, for instance, if you’re more of a cool-color person.

8. Surround yourself with things you love. Take that antique vase out of its protected hiding place and display it where you’ll see it daily. Reminding yourself of good memories instantly boosts happiness.

9. Let artwork symbolize who you want to be or what you want to achieve. No need to buy pricey prints or paintings; hang up magazine pages that inspire you.

10. Stimulate the senses. Do bright light and greenery pep you up? Open every window to let the sunlight pour in, and bring more flowers into your home.
