Cleaning With Lemons

Tackle everyday grime with lemon juice for a home that smells as good as it shines

Kitchen & Bathroom

Bleach wooden chopping boards and remove stains from countertops by rubbing them with undiluted lemon juice. Let sit for a while (a few hours for really bad stains) and wipe clean. But don’t employ this method on marble and granite surfaces — lemon is too corrosive

Put half a lemon in a three-quarters-full bowl of cold water and cook on high in the microwave for three minutes. The fresh citrus smell gets rid of cooking odors and the condensation from the steam loosens dirt and makes cleaning your microwave so much easier. Simply wipe it with a damp cloth afterward.

Banish black spots caused by mildew and mold by making a paste of one part lemon juice to one part baking powder. Leave the paste on for two hours, then rinse off.

Rub shiny brass and copper with lemon juice and a little salt, wash off with cool water, then dry with a soft cloth. Use carefully, since lemon can lighten the color of metal if it’s left on for a long time or if it’s not rinsed off properly.

Restore faded luster to your chrome steel toothbrush holders and faucets by rubbing them with undiluted lemon juice, then rinsing with water. This method is not suitable for plated metals, since lemon might corrode them.

Get a shine on your windows and mirrors with a homemade cleaning solution of 1 liter water, 1/4 cup of vinegar and 2 Tbsp. of lemon juice in a spray bottle. Shake well and use as you would store-bought window cleaner.

Furniture & Floors

Make your wooden furniture gleam! Mix one part olive oil to one part lemon juice, then rub the liquid in with a soft rag. The same mix will also give sparkle to your wooden floors.

Laundry & Shoes

Add 1/2 cup of lemon juice to your laundry rinse cycle when washing whites. You’ll notice the difference!

Lemons can be used to remove fabric stains, including those from blood, grass and rust. Dab salt and lemon juice onto the mark, leave for a while, then rinse well and wash as normal

Lemon juice is an excellent polish for black or tan leather shoes. After you apply it, buff your footwear with a soft cloth.
