Save or Toss?
Before you sweep the top of your desk into the recycling bin, read these tips:

Save legal documents.“Deeds to your house or your car are important to hang on to,” Aronson says. “The same goes for birth certificates or marriage licenses.” Put these important items into a safe-deposit box or fireproof safe in your home. It’s also a good idea to keep medical records, since most doctors’ offices get rid of them every few years.

Toss papers you can replace.“You can easily get copies of any of your bills if you need them,” says Smallin. “Saving bills is usually a big waste of space.”

Toss bulky manuals and phone books. “Most can be found online now, usually with more up-to-date information,” says Smallin.

Save records of any repairs you do on your home or car in case you sell either. “They’ll show how well you maintained them and may affect the price you get,” Aronson says.
