7 Tough-To-Clean Appliances (and How to Tackle Them)
"These top tips will leave those grimy, stinky culprits shining and you feeling like Mr. Clean!"
"Tough task: Smelly garbage disposal
Smart solution: An all-purpose cleaner and ice
How-to hint: Dont put a lemon down the disposal, says Dellutri. ""It leaves pulp and particles behind which can actually cause more odor!""
Tough task: Stained, rusty dishwasher
Smart solution: Tang (yep, the drink mix!)
How-to hint: Fill the detergent containers with the Tang powder and run an empty cycle, says Findley. ""It sounds odd, but it works!"" The citric acid in Tang gets rid of the rust.
Tough task: A non-self-cleaning oven
Smart solution: Oven cleaner from a janitorial supply company
How-to hint: No need to make the oven off-limits overnight. Industrial-strength cleaners do the job in 10 minutes, says Dellutri. Wipe away the mess with paper towels or rags.
Tough task: Streaky stainless-steel appliances
Smart solution: A mixture of one part rubbing alcohol to one part water
How-to hint: Just dip a cloth in it and swipe over spotty areas to bring back the shine.
Tough task: Dryer vent buildup
Smart solution: A dryer vent duster, or simply a long-handled duster
How-to hint: Unhook the vent and stick the duster into the tube to remove fluff (and prevent fires!).
Tough task: Dusty, sticky computer keyboard
Smart solution: Microfiber cloth and an air can
How-to hint: Wipe the dry cloth over the keys to pick up dust. Turn the keyboard upside down and shake out debris, then use an air can (available at computer stores) to blow out gunk between the keys. For sticky surfaces, lightly dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe down.
Tough task: Electric can opener
Smart solution: Dental floss, old toothbrush and white vinegar
How-to hint: Use the floss to remove any muck along the blade and the toothbrush to tackle the rest. Finish off by rubbing it with a little vinegar
to help deodorize and shine the equipment."
