Try these easy ways to make your home sparkle — outside and in

Forget spring-cleaning — summer can be a much better time to get your home in order, says Laura Dellutri, author of “White Couch, With Kids?!”

“The rainy months are over and the good weather’s here, making it easier to roll up your sleeves,” she explains. Luckily, there’s no need to give up your weekends to spiff up your space. The trick? Tackle the outside first, then work your way in. Here’s a cheat sheet so you can hit the beach in no time.

Outdoor

  • Walk through your yard and pick up any fallen tree branches, rocks or other unsightly debris before giving your lawn a fresh mow.

  • If your patio cushions are in good shape, treat them with 3M Scotchgard Fabric Protector, $9, drugstores, to fend off stains. Too damaged to keep? Replace them with pretty new ones to lift your spirits.

  • Brighten plastic resin furniture by sponging it off with a solution of warm water mixed with five to six drops of dish detergent. For wicker or aluminum tables and chairs, try a powdered oxygen cleaner, like OxiClean, $8, oxiclean.com, mixed with water.

  • Planning a party on the deck? Sweep and rinse it down, then clean it with a product like Thompson’s Water Seal Deck Wash, $10, hardware stores, which fights mold, dirt and mildew, says Jeff Wilson, a host on HGTV’s Restore America. Wait about four hours and then slap on a coat of Thompson’s Water Seal Advanced, $15, hardware stores, which helps guard against dirt and rain damage.

  • Swap in new entry mats to your front and deck doors. They make your home look polished and will help cut down on the dirt and sand your family tracks in.

  • Make your grill gleam. Dellutri’s secret weapon: Goo Gone Stainless Steel Grill Restoration Kit, $18, Bed, Bath & Beyond, which comes with polish, microfiber cloths and other tools to degrease and shine.

  • Use a power-washer to rinse off the outside of your house, the driveway, even grimy glass-top patio tables. Don’t own one? Rent or borrow one from your neighbor!

  • Gently cover potted plants with plastic bags and ties, then spray pots with a hose to rinse away grime. Use a paintbrush to wipe dirt and dust off plants.

  • Beautify your yard without the help of a gardener. Add a wind chime and colorful flowerpots. Set up cedar storage boxes with insulated interiors, so you won’t have to haul out an ugly plastic cooler for every party.

    Indoor

  • Get rid of musty smells by spraying an air deodorizer on your couch and other hotspots like the dog’s bed and dirty gym shoes.

  • Buy a few new throw pillows in bright colors and toss them on your couch and beds.

  • Sweep dull or no-wax hardwood floors, then make them gleam with a coat of Quick Shine Floor Care, $10, asontv.com, which dries in just 15 minutes.

  • Clean windows with a squeegee dipped in window cleaner, then dry them with a microfiber cloth to eliminate streaks.

  • Go through your pantry, tossing anything that’s past its expiration date. Wipe down each item with a damp rag or microfiber cloth before you put it back.

  • Sweep out the fireplace, remove the logs and put candles in their place.

  • Dust blinds with a duster that has an extension handle, then use it to clear cobwebs from every corner. Tackle pesky spiders early on, before they become permanent tenants in your home.

  • Go over TVs, DVD players and other electronics with specialized cleaning wipes (try Endust for Electronics, $7, amazon.com). They clean gently and help repel dust between wipe-downs.

  • Give chandeliers and glassware a quick shine with your own two hands! Put on a pair of cotton gloves; use a damp one to dust and polish, and the other to dry. Try this for glass-covered photos and paintings, too; it will prevent water from seeping into frames.

  • Give furniture a once-over with a soft cloth and no-wax furniture polish. Dust nooks and crannies with a soft brush like a pastry brush.

  • For grubby fridge handles, especially textured ones, a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, $4 for 4-pack, drugstores, can work wonders.

  • Wipe down your shower doors with lemon oil dabbed onto a soft cloth to repel soap scum and keep the glass clear. Repeat twice monthly to prevent buildup in the future.

  • Turn off the lights and, when the bulbs are cool, wipe them with a damp cloth to remove dirt. They will seem brighter when you turn them back on.

  • Buy new place mats for your kitchen and dining-room tables. Shop discount stores for fun, seasonal designs or just go for a mix of bright-colored solids.
