Every year at this time were reminded, "Tis better to give than to receive." Its true: Just deciding to give anything provides the gratifying experience of connecting to what you value in the world and connecting to others, says MP Dunleavey, author of
Money Can Buy Happiness. And giving seems to be catching; an American Demographics survey shows that more than half of Americans plan to donate or volunteer during the holidays. But where should you direct your energies and your money to do the most good? Here are Dunleaveys guidelines on how and where to give.
Focus on a Few
Rather than donating five bucks each to 20 organizations, why not donate $20 to the few charities you care about most? Many people have three to five charities they tend to focus on in terms of donating money, whether its Doctors Without Borders or Oxfam, says Dunleavey. But dont feel pressured to donate time and money if your situation doesnt allow for it. Youre more likely to keep giving if you feel comfortable, she adds.
Local Heroes
"Sometimes we feel like giving has to be about donating a lot of money or joining a big cause or organization, but in fact, doing something close to home is just as meaningful, says Dunleavey. The benefit: Donating to a local cause allows you to see the impact youre making. Get a sense of your communitys needs by asking around at your house of worship or reading the community paper to find out about upcoming charity drives.
Listen to Your Heart
Ask yourself, Where would I like to make a difference? suggests Dunleavey. We all have ideas and issues we gravitate toward. Animal lovers may feel happiest helping dogs at the local shelter or giving to the Animal Rescue Foundation (
arf.net). Greens may want to donate their green to Friends of the Earth (
foe.org) or Conservation International (
conservation.org). But first, read a charitys Website to make sure the organizations mission reflects your own values, recommends the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
Let Experience Lead You
If an issue has touched you personally, chances are that supporting a charity devoted to it will make you feel connected to others in a similar situation. Is a loved one affected by a serious illness? Why not help fund research that may find a cure? For instance, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (
lls.org) raises awareness of diseases that affect millions of Americans. On the other hand, if you depended on scholarships to get through college, you can give back by supporting todays bright young minds through Scholarship America (
scholarshipamerica.org).
