Should you get a store credit card?
Pay close attention to what cards are offering, says Margi Rice, a first vice president at SunTrust Bank, in Chapel Hill, N.C. After you assess interest rates and balance-transfer offers, ask
- Is there an annual fee? You should never pay one.
- Is the card adequate for your needs? No one needs more than two cards, says Rice, so make sure the credit line of your new card, combined with that of the other card, is large enough to cover your monthly charges.
- Are there potential land mines in the fine print? Many companies refuse your timely payment if it is not accompanied by the statement coupon. Late fees can be astronomical. Before you sign up, call and ask.
- What are the freebies, such as insurance for car rentals, or extended warranties on purchases?
- How long do you have to pay your bill? A lot of companies have shortened this to about 15 days, says Rice. Find a more forgiving place.
