Home shopping can appeal to vulnerable consumers, and the product pitch-people know just how to play to that crowd, says psychologist April Lane Benson, Ph.D., founder of the Stopping Overshopping organization (stoppingovershopping.com).

“They act like friends. They call you by your first name and establish a pseudo-intimacy that helps them take advantage if you’re lonely.” Before buying, Benson says, “ask yourself: ‘Do I need this?’ ‘Where will I put it?’ ‘How will I pay for it?’

And steer clear of the tube if you’re hungry, tired or emotional — you’re more susceptible to bad decision-making.”
