Guaranteed Happy Returns!

An ultra-liberal return policy can drastically reduce your chances of getting stuck with unflattering, uninteresting or just plain unwanted purchases. Here, who offers the very biggest bang for your (refundable) buck

Home goods: Bed, Bath & Beyond

If you’ve got your receipt, you can exchange merchandise for a full refund indefinitely. You can even take back items you’ve used and decided you hate — like those bath sheets that never felt “right” after you washed them. This is quite a good deal, since comparable stores have a 60-day policy that applies to unused items only.

Off-Price offerings: Kohl’s

Unlike other discount chains, Kohl’s literally gives you forever to return your purchases for a refund. And if the clothes you’ve torn the tags from are accompanied by a receipt — or were purchased with a Kohl’s card — they, too, can be taken back at any time. (Without a receipt, you can exchange merchandise or get a store credit.)

The printed word: Barnes & Noble

If the latest bestseller has bored you to tears, you have 30 days to return it for a full refund (with receipt), or indefinitely to return it for a store credit or exchange, so long as the spine isn’t creased and the pages aren’t tattered. The same holds true for unopened CDs and DVDs.

Electronics: Costco

TVs, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPod/MP3 players, and cellular phones can be returned up to 90 days after they are purchased for a full refund, even if they’ve been opened or used! (Most other electronics sellers often stipulate that items must be returned within 14 days.) Best of all, this cavernous deal-seekers’ paradise doesn’t even charge restocking fee, which, at other spots, can sometimes run between 10 and 20 percent of the purchase price.

Clothing: Macy’s

Still haven’t found a place or a reason to don that fitted sheath? Odds are, there’s plenty of time to hand it back and snag those silver flats you’ve been eyeing instead! As long as you’ve got your receipt, clothing in original condition with tags attached can be returned for a full refund within 180 days. (That’s about six months!) After that, store credit may be issued, as seen fit by individual store managers.

Beauty products: Sephora

If that lipstick that looked so “you” in the store has turned garish or pale by the light of day, head back to the mall and get pretty. If you have your receipt, Sephora will generally allow exchanges or offer a full refund, even if your product’s been opened or is partially used. No receipt? You’ll still be issued a store credit — and there’s no time limit, ever. You can literally return items years after you bought them!

Clutter cutters: The Container Store

Any gal with visions of “organization” dancing in her head — and a garage full of storage bins to prove it! — will love this: Every stackable, packable wonder found here can be returned at any time for a refund as long as there’s a receipt and the item is in its original condition. Super-retailers with similar wares generally have a 60- to 90-day policy.
