Tricks for getting extra mileage out of beauty splurges
Eau de Parfums
Store your perfume in your bedroom (not in the bathroom) to extend its shelf life by months. Hot steam can break down the fragrance and change its aroma, says Susie Galvez in her book The Thrifty Girls Guide to Glamour.
You know that atomizer thats been collecting dust? Pour some of your favorite perfume into it. The spritz from an atomizer isnt as powerful as the original bottle, but it is dispersed a lot better, which means you use less each time.
Facials
Drink lots of water after your facial (whether you go to a spa or do it at home) to flush away the toxins that have just been released in your body. Youll notice your complexion stays clear longer.
Avoid wearing makeup after a facial, since a dirty brush or contaminated makeup can break out just-treated and, thus, sensitive skin.
French Manicures
Theres no rule that says you MUST use a stark white for the tips. Try using off-white or a creamy beige instead for a more natural look that is less likely to show chipping.
After you polish your nails, place them in very cold water for one minute. This will help polish to set and freeze in place, warding off smudges.
Beauty Brushes
Invested in a luxe set of makeup brushes? Keep them germ-free (and well-working) by cleaning them once a week. Just apply a small amount of shampoo to the bristles and run under warm water until the water runs clear.
After you remove the strands from a boars hair brush (which are the priciest kind of brushes), dip the bristles in a warm water and liquid soap bath several times. Finally, rinse with cool water and let air-dry. PS: Never soak a natural hair brush in soapy water, as this could cause the bristles and handle to warp.
